Rationale: Bright Beginnings has specific procedures for nappy changing and toileting so that there is no risk of infection spreading among children and staff. This policy will ensure that staff and parents/caregivers are aware of their responsibilities when changing children and that each child is treated with dignity and respect during nappy changing and toileting times.
Objectives: The process for changing and toileting children is a safe and positive experience that provides a learning opportunity.
Policy and recommended procedure:
- Only permanent staff, Persons Responsible and the casual staff who having been relieving on a consistent basis are permitted to do nappy changing and toileting duties
- The centre will display procedures for nappy changing and toileting children. These will be displayed at each change table and children’s toilet area
- Routine nappy changing and children toileting times are generally after morning tea, lunch, before bed, upon waking, and following afternoon tea. Other times are as required
- Children will be talked through the nappy/toileting process, providing a positive, interactive learning experience. Children will be encouraged to be independent, but will have assistance when necessary during the toileting process
- Staff will wash their hands after toileting each child or changing each nappy and undergarments. Single-use disposable gloves are available. Children’s hands will be washed if necessary
- Soiled disposable nappies will be placed in the nappy sanitising unit in the nappy changing area in the Under Twos or the main bathroom in the Over Twos. Cloth nappies are to be cleaned of excess matter, placed in a plastic bag, then placed in the appropriate bag hanging on the wall
- After each nappy change, the changing mat will be cleaned with antiseptic solution and the child’s daily nappy changing record updated
- Children may bring their own potty from home. Bright Beginnings has a centre potty and child toilet seat if needed. Potties and children’s seats will be cleaned after each use. All toileting and toileting accidents will be recorded on the nappy and toileting chart
- Children will be assisted as necessary when changing out of wet or soiled clothes. Wet or soiled clothing will be cleaned of excess matter, soaked and placed in child’s soiled clothes bag to take home
- Showering facilities will be available for heavily soiled children
- Staff will avoid changing children in the bag area. The toilet area is preferable when it is necessary to change a child’s undergarments
- Children will be treated with respect and dignity at all times.
